YOUTUBE SHORTS FOR MUSICIANS

How long should a music video Short be?

YouTube currently classifies eligible square or vertical videos of up to three minutes as Shorts. That is the platform limit, not a target every music clip needs to reach.

Let the musical moment set the length

A Short should be long enough to deliver one complete idea: a chorus payoff, a memorable lyric, a beat change or a visual reveal. End after that moment resolves. Extending a clip simply to reach a round number can weaken its ending, while cutting too early can remove the payoff that makes it worth replaying.

For a song, test the natural boundaries of the phrase instead of forcing every clip into the same duration. ChorusCut accepts clip lengths from 5 to 180 seconds and keeps the exact start and end under manual control.

Three different cuts reveal more than one

Create a leading hook plus two contrasting moments. One might open directly on the chorus, another on a verse with a strong first line, and the third on a visual or musical change. Reviewing three genuinely different cuts is more useful than exporting the same section with slightly different timestamps.

Design the opening for a vertical feed

The first frame should communicate something immediately. Remove silence, empty setup and camera movement that only makes sense in the full video. Check the crop in 9:16, keep faces and text clear of interface areas, and preview the result on a phone before publishing.

Use longer Shorts deliberately

A longer Short can work when the section develops, tells a story or rewards the viewer with a clear change. It should not be longer only because YouTube permits three minutes. Watch the finished clip from the perspective of somebody who has never heard the song and remove any section that depends on missing context.

Music and copyright eligibility can vary with clip length and the audio used. Review YouTube's current rules before publishing third-party material, and only upload music and video you are allowed to use.

Build a repeatable test

Publish distinct moments and compare audience retention, replays, saves, shares and visits to the full release. Change one major variable at a time. That makes the next edit an informed decision rather than a guess.

ChorusCut turns one uploaded music video into three separate vertical candidates. You can adjust each candidate manually, render it as a 1080×1920 MP4 and download every finished Short separately.
