The first second of a music video Short.
A viewer does not know your song yet. The opening frame must make the moment understandable before asking for another second of attention. That usually means showing the performance, lyric, movement or finished vertical result immediately.
Start with the result, not the explanation
A logo animation, loading screen or sentence explaining what is about to happen delays the payoff. Open on the strongest finished frame. If the clip demonstrates an editing workflow, show the completed Short first and reveal the process afterwards.
Make the opening readable without sound
The first frame should still communicate something when the phone is muted. Keep one short line of text inside the vertical safe area. Use contrast, a large type size and a visual that remains clear behind interface buttons.
Let the music begin on an intentional beat
A musical hook does not always begin at the first beat of a chorus. Test the lyric, movement or transition immediately before the payoff. Preserve enough context for the phrase to feel deliberate, but remove silence and unrelated setup.
Change one opening variable at a time
Compare two genuinely different starts from the same source video. Keep the length, caption and publishing window similar. Then retention differences are more useful: you are testing the opening rather than several unrelated creative choices.
Judge more than views
Views alone do not show whether a clip attracted potential users or listeners. Review average watch time, the first major retention drop, completion rate, profile visits and the next measurable action. A smaller post that drives qualified visits can be more valuable than a larger passive audience.
A simple pre-publish checklist
Watch the clip once with sound and once muted. Confirm the first frame already contains the subject, the text can be read on a phone, the audio starts cleanly, the final frame does not linger and the call to action describes a real next step.
